  • Historical floods in Czech Republic in the Central-European context: Documentation, evaluation and impacts

  • Responsible person: RNDr. Jan Munzar, CSc.
  • 2006 - 2008
  • Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic - IAA300860601 - Grants of distinctly investigative character focused on the sphere of research pursued at present particularly in the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic
  • The issue of high waters has become a cross-sectional problem of the recent state policy due to flood disasters in Czechia in 1997 and 2002. The floods reminded us once again that to underestimate the continual study of hydrometeorological extremes and risks, to which belong an opposite poles - extraordinary drought (which affected not only the Czech Republic but also other EU countries in 2003) may be rather costly. Great natural disasters usually do not affect only one country but their impacts reach far behind the country borders. This fully applies to important historical floods occurring on large rivers of Elbe, Oder and Danube. Therefore, their assessment will not do without a systematic documentation and analyses of data concerning concrete events in more EU countries as a very valuable information follows only from their mutual comparison as a results of international cooperation. The main goal is to obtain a complete picture of flood disasters in Central Europe since 1501.

  • Middle course of the Svratka River valley - geomorphology, Quaternary development and environmental aspects

  • Responsible person: RNDr. Karel Kirchner, CSc.
  • 2006 - 2008
  • Czech Science Foundation - GA205/06/1024 - Standard projects
  • The object of the project is geomorphological research of Middle Svratka R. valley with the aim to get complex information about the development during the Quaternary Period and of environmental properties of the relief. By the complex geomorphological analysis will be obtained data of landscape forms of the Middle Svratka R. valley, with emphasis on fluvial, eolian and cryogenic forms. Quaternary development of the area under study and source areas of fluvial deposits will be reconstructed, based on sedimentological analysis of fluvial deposits, morphostratigraphical analysis of river terraces and their chronology. Historical maps, aerial photographs and field geomorphological mapping will be used for characterization of anthropogenic forms and evaluation of natural areas, which are valuable from the point of view of protection of nature and landscape. Obtained data will be processed by GIS methods. The research will result in the model of spatial relief differentiation in the scale 1 : 25 000.

  • Morphostructural analysis of the Bohutický les Upland in a context of geomorphological evolution of the south-eastern margin of the Bohemian Massif

  • Responsible person: Mgr. Pavel Roštínský, Ph. D.
  • 2006 - 2008
  • Czech Science Foundation - GP205/06/P188 - Post-graduate (doctorate) grants
  • The intention of the project is to compile a complex morphostructural analysis of the Bohutický les Upland in the south-western Moravia (eastern part of the Czech Republic) and to put its results into a context of geomorphological evolution of the south-eastern margin of the Bohemian Massif on its contact with the Carpathian Foredeep. The area under study is a component of the Diendorf Fault System continuing from the Austrian region, being significantly reactivated during the Alpine orogeny in the Neogene and Quaternary. The project outcomes will comprise knowledge in character of neotectonic activity of the Diendorf Fault and other dislocations in the objective area, the recognition of distribution, genesis and age of its landforms including man-made forms by means of detailed field geomorphological mapping, understanding of interrelationships between Proterozoic and Palaeozoic fundament-rocks of the Bohemian Massif and Neogene and Quaternary cover formations studied on the basis of field mapping, sedimentological analyses, geophysical surveying and, in the synthetic part, also the demarcation of morphostructural subunits. Major evolution phases will be proposed.
